Mark Brandenburg is a lifelong
resident of Council Bluffs.
He attended Rue Elementary, Woodrow Wilson Jr. High and Thomas Jefferson High School. He graduated with an Associate of Arts Degree from Iowa Western Community College and a Bachelor of Science Degree from Bellevue University. Mark worked for 34 years for the Omaha Public Power District (OPPD). Before entering management at OPPD, Mark was a long-time member of the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers, Local 1483. He also served on the OPPD Federal Credit Union Board of Directors. He currently is the Vice President of the Board of Directors of the Union Pacific Railroad Museum. He is also on the board of directors for the IWCC alumni association and the senior citizens center.
Mark has demonstrated his commitment to education by receiving two degrees, attending college at night while working full-time during the day. He was elected in 1990 and again in 2005 to the Council Bluffs Community School District Board of Education. Mark also serves on the Iowa Western Community College Alumni Association Board of Directors. In addition, Mark has been an Adjunct Instructor for Iowa Western Community College since 2001. He has always felt education is important and enjoys teaching. Mark knows first-hand the issues and circumstances that teachers deal with and face on a daily basis.
Mark is a staunch supporter of the Second Amendment, is a member of Pheasants Forever and is a Life Member of the National Rifle Association. He is a member of the Sons of the American Legion and supports our men and women who are fighting for our country and honors those that have died or have been injured. Mark is a former Volunteer Deputy and was a Cub Master when his children were in Cub Scouts.
Mark got interested in politics originally because of his commitment to the sanctity of life and the Second Amendment. He was inspired by President Ronald Reagan. Mark and his wife Debbie have two sons, Chad (who married Michelle Murphy) and Travis (who married Michelle Horrocks), and have four grandchildren. Mark and Debbie are members of the Eastside Christian Church.
Unlike his opponent, Mark is not a career politician. He has been a union member and has worked in management, so he can see both sides of the issues. He knows what it is like to go to school at night while working full-time during the day. He knows what it is like to teach in a classroom and what it takes to run a school district. He grew up in the west end of Council Bluffs and attended public schools
